Context
reSkued is a Cargill startup dedicated to combating food waste at the distributor level through a B2B marketplace.
By identifying at-risk inventory, reSkued focuses on preventing food waste and selling products to local businesses before they go bad.
Solution
My team leveraged user feedback from recent test pilots to identify customer experience friction areas and prototype UX improvements. Specifically, it was noted from the pilots that the ability to delegate pickup and split bulk orders with others would be a valuable feature for reSkuers.
Background & Research
Use Cases & Competitive Analysis
From the first test pilot, the reSkued product team identified sources of UX friction areas and formed two different backlog items: delegating pickup and group buying. We researched on similar products that had these two features and explored how aspects of them could be implemented into reSkued, along with the overall goal of these features.
Why is Delegating Pickup Useful?
Delegating the task of picking up Reskued orders to someone other than the main account holder
This feature is meant to address the cases in which the account owner can’t pick up their ReSkued order
“I need my assistant manager to pick up my order for me every other week!”
case 1: adding an alternate pickup person to your account
Main account holder can add authorized alternate pickup people to grab their orders
Provide vehicle model and color of alternate driver for added verification
Driver can press a button and signal they’re on the way, alerting facility to have order prepped by arrival
“I need a fellow Reskuer to pick up my order this Friday—I’ll split the flour in my order with them as compensation.”
case 2: reaching out to the reskued community for help with order pickup
Users can post their pending order to a virtual board for other Reskuers to accept
Completing a pickup for compensation can be introduced (ex: setting aside a portion of your order to donate to those who pick up the order)

When looking for inspiration, Target provided great examples of user flows (changing pickup person, adding alternate pickup person) that demonstrate smooth curbside pickups for the customer, and we used this as inspiration to approach our next steps in designing.
Why is Group Buying Useful?
Can two smaller businesses take advantage of bulk purchasing?
“Is anyone else interested in half of __”
“Want to split this?”
Why?
Quantities might be too large for small businesses
Prices might be too expensive for small businesses
“Splitting the cost of our dairy and produce orders helps us save money each week!”
case 1: knowing another business to split with
Users can add products to the same cart
The cart will automatically split up the prices
Access to cheaper orders while avoiding food waste
“I’m new to town and these bulk orders are too big for me. Hopefully I can find other businesses willing to split with me!”
case 2: needing to find another business to split with
Users can post to a virtual board of what kind of products they want to split
Users have access to a list of businesses open to splitting their orders
Opportunity for business owners to build new connections in their community while saving money

Both Doordash and Uber Eats offer systems where customers can seamlessly split orders. We used this as inspiration in order to offer users of reSkued the opportunity to not only create group orders between businesses, but monitor the status and split the cost of said orders efficiently.
A Big Insight...
When designing the use cases around pickup delegation and group buying, we realized something.
For reSkued to have longevity as a concept as well as a greater environmental impact, we needed to capitalize on the group aspect of the product.

reSkued Community
As we worked on conceptualizing our two main features, we came to realize how they overlapped in many ways. My design partner and I arrived at a new opportunity that we called “reSkued Community”, inspired by the fact that reSkued could maximize its impact if it incorporated and prioritized the power of community organization.
We imagined that the features where reSkuers would be interacting frequently with each other would exist on a new tab in the site, called the community tab.

User Flows/Low Fidelity Wireframes
After coming to the realization that these two imagined features could thrive in the same area of the app, we worked on quick, messy iterations of potential user flows to help work our way through the interaction.

Features
delegating pickup

Once an order has been completed, users can add an alternate pickup person to retrieve the order
Another option is posting a pickup request to the community tab in the event that the user doesn't already have someone else to pick up their order
viewing community pickup requests

Order pickup requests uploaded by other business owners nearby can be found in the community tab
Users can monitor and edit their own pickup requests posted to the app
starting a group cart

After gathering items in your cart, create a group cart and send an invite link to split the order
Once split, the cart total will update to reflect the amount that each member in the order owes
creating an order split request
Users can select a bulk item that may be too big for their own business needs and create a split request
Business info and contact information can be uploaded in the process of creating a request to make contacting you easier!
Additional Features
In addition to delegating pickups and group buying, my teammate Sara Lin and I were able to complete additional backlog tasks that covered different areas of Reskued’s goals during the course of our time working at Cargill that summer such as...
Distributor Dashboard
Wholesale Auctions
Volume Pricing
Substitutions
Delegating Pickups

Reflection
Increased confidence working with clients
This was only my second time working with clients in my design career, and this was the first time designing for such a large company. In Week 1 I was so nervous about the prospect of presenting work to senior members of the company, but by the time our final presentation came I felt so much better!
Adapting to a more flexible design process
This was my first experience working within the Agile methodology. I was so used to the rigid structure found in design classes, but I quickly learned that having short cycles with frequent checkins really helped my design process.
Working as a solo designer on specific tasks
I was so grateful to experience the needed discomfort of designing features from start to finish by myself. While I had my partner to bounce ideas off of, doing my own research, sketches, iterations, and presentation planning for weekly client calls was a great way to reinforce my confidence as a strong designer.

Sara and I were finalists for the “Most Competent and Collaborative Team” at the 2023 Research Park Intern Awards!
